What To Look For In A Scottsdale Personal Trainer

Unless you have a referral, finding and choosing a personal trainer takes some time and effort. Even if you have a referral, you may not be compatible with the trainer for a number of reasons.

As a Scottsdale personal trainer, I’ve been around many personal trainers in the past. I’ve observed many training sessions, many good and some cringe-worthy.

Keep the following in mind when you’re deciding on a Scottsdale personal trainer.

-Don’t judge a trainers ability to get you fit by his or her body. Maybe I should qualify that by saying that just because a trainer’s body is statuesque, it doesn’t mean they know how to get you there too. However, if a so-called trainer is obviously out-of-shape, run don’t walk.

-It’s hard to know in advance, although the first meeting should clue you in: will the trainer listen to you? Really listen. What motivates you? What are your preexisting injuries? Will they respect your intensity threshold while you acclimate to getting back into shape. A trainer who listens and empathizes a little will probably be less likely to get you injured and/or burnt-out.

-All certifications are not equal. Nearly all trainers have opinions about what certification is the best. And very often, it’s the one they have; I chose the ACSM cert because it’s generally considered very intensive. Since my undergraduate is in English, I wanted to make sure I had one of the most respected certifications out there. It feels like a mid-level physiology final, and it typically requires months of preparation. On the other hand, there are others that you can get in weekend.

-Make sure that the trainer’s location is close to you. This might sound obvious but it can really make life (and compliance) difficult. You don’t need the added stress and your workouts will suffer if you are consistently late.

-Personal trainers are personal trainers. Unless they have other qualifications, they are not nutritionists, chiropractors, internists or naturopaths.

-Do your personalities mesh? They better. Is the trainer… totally self-absorbed. You could end up listening to someone rambling on and on about their date last night while you’re pushing yourself to finish that last set. This really does happen. So take the trainer up on a free session or consultation first.

-Professionalism. This is especially important because of the closeness that can develop between clients and trainers. You want to feel like the trainer is respecting the implied confidentiality of the relationship. Age should not really be as much of a factor as aptitude and personality; I know a 20 year old trainer who is quite good and takes his job very seriously.

At the end of it all, remember: there is no magic workout, and training isn’t rocket science. It’s my impression that personal training is more art than science. I’ve found that in general, if you’ve selected a personal trainer that pretty much knows what they’re doing, you will make more progress than you think possible... if you show up consistently.
