How can I increase my metabolism?

Sometimes it’s not their metabolism at all, but rather a misunderstanding of their caloric intake. Sometimes its an overestimation of the fat burned during exercise. Other times, the metabolism could truly use improvement. Even if your metabolism is only a little slower than it could be, you’ll hold those extra calories as body fat. That will amount to several extra pounds of fat mass gained each year.

Metabolism Defined

First off, metabolism is the creation of energy for every bodily functions. This energy comes from food. So, metabolism is the transitioning of food into energy. The more intense this fire is, the more calories the you will burn. If the process is more sluggish, less calories will be burned. Again, the unused will be stored as fat on the body.

When your metabolism is working properly, we eat, digest and then we absorb the energy potential. The nutrients then enter into the cells of the body. That is the cycle: we use those nutrients to produce energy.

Diet Influences Metabolism Tremendously

The basic material for your metabolism comes from what you eat. So, if you eat poor quality food, your metabolism will suffer.

For example, so-called man-made, or hydrogenated fats, get absorbed by the body like unprocessed fats. But unlike natural fats, your body lacks an enzyme to break these hydrogenated fats down into usable pieces. So, because they cannot be used as energy, the body is incorporates these man-made fats into cell walls. This is not good. Without getting too far into cellular biology, the result causes cells to become much efficient at getting and using fuel. The end result is slower, or impaired metabolism.

Another cell structure that gets hurt is the mitochondria. You mmay recall that the this cellular organ is "The powerhouse of the cell". The mitochondria within the cells are needed for burning fuel and to create power. When these cells are impaired, metabolism slows down considerably. It is also believed that too many free-radicals cause damage to the mitochondria. When this happens, its usually the case of too few antioxidants being present. Antioxidants shield your body from these harmful byproducts. They are known as free radicals. Your body operates in a way that assumes the damage-reducing free radicals will be present. However, with our processed and industrialized diets, this is rarely the case.

It isn't only the quality level of mitochondria but also the amount that influence and determines cellular metabolism. The more mitochondria a person has within their cell walls, the quicker their metabolism will be. While the fitness of existing mitochondria is in part determined by the type of nutrition consumed, the number of mitochondria in the cell is for the most part determined by lifestyle choices. The best part is that you can drive the number of mitochondria up through certain kinds of exercise.

“What can I do to increase my metabolism?”

There is some evidence that eating more meals daily actually increases your metabolism. This is thought to be due to the fating response in many animals. Humans appear to be no different. If the body "perceives" that there is a scarcity of food, it slows down the metabolism overall. This may actually trigger a physiological mechanism responsible for increased fat storage. Since you probably are not in a famine, you dont want that.

Here are some tips to "increase my metabolism":

Increase My Metabolism: 1- Do Aerobic Exercise

Perform exercise that drives your body’s mitochondria levels up. This type of workout boosts the oxygen capacity of your body by as much as 30%. This capacity is commonly referred to as V02 maximum. Perhaps the best way to do this is aerobic or cardiovascular exercise. Continuous activities like running, bicycling, swimming or even properly designed circuit training with weights.

The best exercise for quickly and dramatically building quicker metabolism is high-intensity intervals . This technique involves switching short periods of maximum effort with alternating periods partial recovery, or lessened effort. Using a treadmill workout as an example, take 1-minute at a quick running speed and then alternate 1-2 minutes at a mild walking or jogging effort. A workout like this would alternate like this for about 10 to 20 minutes. Depending on ability level, you may be able to go longer.
In general, we recommend about a half-hour of cardio-aerobic activity as many days as possible. 4 is the ideal minimum.

Increase My Metabolism: 2- Reduce Hydrogenated Fats

Eliminate or at least reducing foods with man-made hydrogenated oils, including partially hydrogenated soybean and vegetable oil. The most common foods containing these less desirable hydrogenated fats include margarine, potato chips and commonly found pre-packages baked goods.

Increase My Metabolism Step: 3- Eat a variety of Antioxidant Rich Foods

Include and increase your intake of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. For example, the acai berry, which is native to the South American rain forest, has the highest recorded capacity to absorb and neutralize free radicals. Other foods rich in antioxidants include garlic, turmeric, spinach, plums, blueberries and beets.

Increase My Metabolism:4- Increase Lean Body Mass

This is probably the big one. Just a few extra pounds of muscle burns several hundred more calories per day. This happens even at rest. That means that extra pounds will be lost each year. And remember, lean muscle is quite a bit smaller than fat pound for pound. So, you won’t look bulky. You will just get more muscle tone. A basic full body strength training routine several days weekly can dramatically boost your metabolism within weeks.
