Home Fitness Gym Equipment

Home Fitness Equipment

It isn’t all that complicated. Just make sure that you have the fundamental equipment. As a trainer, I think it's important that you are able to do a variety of full-body workouts. This includes at least dumbbells and a solid bench. Then you might add barbells and a Swiss ball.

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are a home fitness gym essential, necessary for presses, arm exercises and even some core exercises. There are a variety of dumbbells out there, from the very cheap to the boutique. All of these fall into one of two categories: fixed weight or handles only.

Handles are plate loaded, meaning you slide the weight plate on it yourself and then fasten the weight with collars. Handles are either standard or Olympic. Standard are slightly smaller in diameter than Olympic. You will want to coordinate any plate loaded barbells with your dumbbells so that the weights are compatible and interchangeable. Standard handles start at about $8. Olympic are pricier and longer. This added length actually takes some getting used to on certain exercises.

Standard Handle Dumbbells

Fixed dumbbells look great and are more convenient since no loading is required. Buying a set of fixed 5 to 50 pound dumbbells, including the rack, will cost around $800. Not cheap and they require lots of space.

Fixed Dumbells

Selectorized dumbbells, or ‘power blocks’, are essentially nested hand weights. They quickly plate load the dumbbell for you. They also make designing your home fitness gym easier, as they require little space. Expect to pay around $250 for a unit that goes from 5 to 45 pounds.

Barbells

Like dumbbells, barbells come in standard and Olympic. Again, make sure they're compatible with your dumbbells. Note: 7 foot standard bars will work on an Olympic bench but an Olympic bar won’t fit on a standard bench. More on benches later.

A standard barbell set, including a 20 pound bar, 85 pounds of plates and 2 dumbbell handles with collars, will run about $100. This isn’t a lot of weight. You'll probably want to buy more at some point.

Standard Barbell with Plates and Collar

At 44 pounds, Olympic bars weigh more than standard. A set like the one above, only with 225 pounds of weight, is also around $200. This is possibly the single best investment you will make for any home fitness gym.

Benches

Quality is important when it comes to benches. Since you're going to be lifting heavy weight over your chest and head, make sure it’s solid.

You can find a flat bench from around $120. With a simple utility bench and some dumbbells, you can create a complete workout. For $50 more, you can buy a bench that also inclines too. For $100 more, you’ll get one that inclines and declines. Both of these will add a few more options to your workouts. The space requirement for a bench like this is about a 10x6.

Flat, Utility Bench

Barbell bench

A flat barbell bench that also inclines and declines can be found for around $150 to $300. More expensive versions have squat rack plus dip capabilities. They're fairly large and will take up more space. Your home gym design will need an 11 foot square area.

Barbell/Squat Rack

Squat Rack and Power Rack

A dedicated squat rack will run about $200 and up, but without one of these -or at least a barbell bench that double as a squat rack- how else can you safely attempt this most important lift? The squat rack can also double as a bench press rack and a standing shoulder press rack.

A Power Rack is a large, tall rack that runs about $550. If you want to go heavy, a power rack makes it a safer proposition. But, at 7’ tall, a Power Rack requires a large space for your home gym design.

Chin Up Bar

A chin up bar is a nice piece of equipment for any home fitness gym. Chin ups, or “Lat Pulls”, develop the overall musculature of the back. Secondarily, they also give your arms a good workout. Initially, you may not be able to do more than a few chin ups. Don’t be discouraged. Performing even 8 in a row is a sign of fairly well-developed strength.

A chin up bar can be made out of any material that will support your weight. You can usually find a decent chin up bar for $10-$40. This kind braces in a doorway. A more solidly built doorway bar –that can hold 200 pounds or more- will be more in the neighborhood of $60. You can find a really nice wall mounted bar for about $150.

Swiss Ball

I use Swiss Balls when I train clients, but not nearly as much as some trainers. I think that they’re actually inappropriate for many situations in which the true goal is pure strength or muscle growth. However, they do make your core muscles work in novel ways, and Swiss balls can recruit more muscles during exercises. They also help you figure out which side of your body is stronger, as strength discrepancies become more obvious.

Swiss Ball

Swiss balls will run between $15 and $50 (You can find a dedicated Swiss ball pump for $10). Make sure you invest in a ball that is tougher and more durable than the less expensive ones generally are. Which size to buy depends on your height:

45cm: 4’7”-5’
55cm: 5’1”- 5’6”
65cm: 5’7” – 5’11”
75cm: 6’ – 6’3”
